do i need to change the manifold when replacing thermostat
On a 1996 Chevy Lumina with a 3.1-liter engine, the thermostat is located at the engine end of the upper radiator hose. To access it, you'll need to disconnect the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing, which is bolted to the engine. The thermostat itself sits inside the housing, where it regulates coolant flow between the engine and the radiator.
Should be in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose
Look where the top radiator hose connects to the engine(water pump).
In the connection at the radiatorhose and waterpump Follow the upper radiator hose out of the radiator. When that hose connects to your engine, the thermostat is in there.

Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine block. The part the hose is connected to is the thermostat housing. The thermostat is under it.
At the engine end of the upper rad hose. Make sure when replacing it the spring goes toward the engine.
Change your thermostat. Mine had the same problem and it was stuck open.
