It is on the back of the alternator, Disconnect the Battery first!. There is a small module on the back of alternator remove and replace.

It's an internal regulator held in place by 2 screws on the back of the alternator.
Unplug the electrical connection and remove the two bolts holding it. Reverse order to install.

it will be a silver box 3 to 4 inches square with a wide flat plug either bolted to the firewall or one of the fenders

They might have a different internal voltage regulator that is used.The idiot light in some systems acts as a resistance that makes the regulator to charge.try putting a small automotive bulb in series with regulator connection at the alternator and see if your gague reads any voltage then.Check a motor manual to define the correct connection post.
I believe it is built into the altenator.
