Cleaning the Front Headlight LensOne of the causes of oxidation is the natural build up of loose oxygen electrons also known as "free radicals" that are attracted to the surface of the headlight. In turn, they can attract road debris, such as gas and oil, causing the lens to become foggy.

Environment and vehicle maintenance will determine how fast this will happen.

The oxygenated surface solidifies into a hard outer coating.

The low tech way to solve this problem was to use an abrasive to grind the oxidation away. The problem with that method is that it causes additional harm in while removing oxidation. Thermoplastic based headlight lens are hard but they are covered with a softer thin membrane that serves as a layer of Ultra Violet (UV) Light protection. This thin factory installed layer stops the suns UV rays from turning the plastic lenses yellow. Note that there are many names for plastic lenses: Acrylic and Polycarbonate are two more terms used to describe these lenses. After market abrasive headlight cleaning kits will sometimes offer a sealant to replace the destroyed UV layer. These sealants are not UV protective and will themselves turn yellow and peel off your lenses in a few months. The heat and light from the headlight bulb itself will accelerate the process.

The best way to clean the lenses is to use a deoxidizer Deoxidizers are pure liquid non abrasive molecular reactive formula that will remove oxidation on contact. Designed to attract the oxygenated electrons away from the lenses, it will not harm the UV layer, nor do they leave scratches. A true Deoxidizer will remove oxidation on contact without buffing or excessive rubbing. It only takes about 60 seconds per headlight lenses cluster.

Imitation De oxidizers require lots of rubbing. These imitations include rubbing compounds, plastic polish, wax and toothpaste. All will eventually remove oxidation along with the UV layer leaving your lenses clouded.
