only time a thermostat needs replacing is if it doesnt work
generally when they quit, the engine will over heat
this is caused by the thermostat not opening properly
easiest way to test this is to get engine to running temp
then with engine running a little faster than idle, remove radiator cap and look to see if the coolant is circulating in radiator
if no circulation, the thermostat has not opened and needs replacement
only other way to test is to remove thermostat from engine and test in bioiling water
but if you do that, u may as well replace it while it is out
The thermostat is located in the housing and the engine end of the top radiator hose. Remove the 2 bolts and replace the thermostat.
