if you don't have a manual (your best bet) then look on the inside of the cover of the fuse panel. alot of times there is a diagram there. hope that helps you.
Check your fuse. Find a diagram of your fuse box to find the correct one to check. Check your bulbs. Check your brake light switch.

There is a round piece of soft plastic that sits on the inside of the hardware that controls the brake pedal arm. A white piece directly across from this piece apparently activates or deactivates the brake lights. This blue piece of plastic pushes in that white piece enough to make the brake lights go off. This blue piece has broken down over time. Now, if I can just find a replacement part...
I have the same problem with my 1998 wrangler, I have been told it is the Multi-function switch in the steering column, but I have not changed it yet, can't seem to find it at local auto parts store!
