You can't always go by the absolute distributor cap position. Sometimes the gear has been turned over the life of the engine, so if you have removed all sparkplug wires and have to start over there are a few simple things to try: Turn the engine by hand until you see the #1TDC mark comming up. Cover the sparkplug hole with your finger and then continue to turn the toward TDC. If you feel no compression as you turn the engine, the crankcase is 360 off and the distributor is 180 off. If there IS compression, you're comming up on TDC. When the timing mark comes to top and you're building compression, the distributor rotor is pointing at #1.
