How do you fix a 2001 Impala gas gauge that stayed on full then and went to empty and the trouble light came on but it took only 5 gallons to fill up?

I have the same problem, it is probably the sending unit on the fuel pump, it is a common problem I've been told!

The pump is in the fuel tank and can be quite pricey, most places just replace the fuel pump as the sending unit is attached already and comes as one unit, however they do sell it separately.
