The method of repair depends on what is broken or worn the steering column. In a 1963 Impala has universal joints and couplings that can wear, as well as electrical connections. Any of these will wear over time.
Key is on steering column--control rod is connected to switch on lower end of steering column by brake pedal
You can go to a parts house or bookstore and purchase a Haynes Manual and it will have all the information you will need. They have them for every car so that you do not get something that you do not need.
If you are looking for one it is usually on the drivers side of the car.

You have to replace the entire steering column. It is not loose, the lock is broken on your column height adjuster.
Go to the library and get a chiltons repair manual for your year, it will be the same column as the regular chevelle.
