The knocking noise in or around the catalytic converter comes because something is broken. It could be a pipe or a strap or something else. Fix it before you leave your exhaust pipe on the road.
I have found that the noise that you are hearing are due to a belt adjustment that your car needs to have done - that is if you have a 2006-2008. Mine is making that noise but the dealer that I got it from are having a hard time reading the tsb on it so that they can properly fix the noise.
It is your blend door actuator. Good luck! It is a cheap part but an expensive time consuming fix.
To fix a knocking engine noise in a 1989 Nissan 240SX, start by checking the engine oil level and condition, as low or dirty oil can cause knocking. If the oil is fine, inspect the engine for loose components, such as heat shields or exhaust parts. A more serious issue could involve worn bearings or a damaged piston, so consider performing a compression test or a rod knock diagnosis. If the problem persists, it may be best to consult a mechanic for a thorough inspection and possible repairs.
I have a 1997 Chevy Malibu with 176k on it. Never had a new engine or anything, runs like a champ. It has been making a knocking noise when its cold.(until car is warm) for a long time now. It still makes a little one while at idle, not loud or can even really be heard though.
