not sure about the 2004, but with the 2000 Malibu the catalytic converter is built into the front pipe on the exhaust. i bought mine for 150 online. the part that is mounted to the engine has two 9/16 nuts holding on the two bolt flange, the other side is a three bolt flange connected to the rear section of exhaust near the o2 sensor. i had to cut the heads off of the bolts and then heat them while removing them with vice grips. i then replaced them with a couple of standard 5/16 bolts and nuts.
