Actronix makes a hand held scanner that you can buy for about 30 bucks or you can take it to a dealership and they'll pull the codes. It isn't a standard interface, so most auto parts stores will want to sell you the doodad, but won't let you just use it.

How do you get diagnostic codes from 1993 Ford Tempo 2.2 liter?

To retrieve diagnostic codes from a 1993 Ford Tempo 2.2 liter, you can use the onboard diagnostic system by connecting a jumper wire between the "ALDL" (Assembly Line Diagnostic Link) terminals A and B in the diagnostic connector. Once connected, turn the ignition key to the "On" position without starting the engine. The Check Engine Light will flash a series of codes on the dashboard, which you can then interpret using a code chart specific to the vehicle. Make sure to refer to a repair manual for the exact meanings of the codes retrieved.
