I have an 87, and it has a cross member under the transfer case, while the transmission just bolts to the back of the engine. If you have a 2WD model, maybe it goes under the transmission, since there's no transfer case? Anyhow, it's a simple bolt-on part... you'll need a transmission jack to hold up the transmission while you remove the cross member, and you simply unbolt it.
