have owned an 84 now for 20 years,which is essentially the same truck,over the years,i have replaced all of the heater components(heater core and fan motor),this is a breeze as both peices are fully accessible from under the hood in the passenger side of the firewall- fan motor is a no-brainer as it sits up top staring you in the face(attached by a few screws). the heater core is a little more involved,but still very straight forward- follow the coolant lines into the firewall and you'll see how it is secured.
