The bearings can get noisy and you may see the water pump pulley and fan wobble when the engine is running and of course the obvious would be coolant leaking out the weep hole in the water pump.

In most cases the water pump will start to leak coolant when it is going bad.
It is rare for a water pump not to work however a water pump going bad will leak coolant and can be noisy from bad bearings.
In most cases the pump will start leaking coolant out of the weep hole and or you may hear the pump bearing going bad.
You will know if you have a leaky water pump because it will be leaking coolant out of the water pump.
It sounds like a loud bearing going out in a pump. The noise comes from the engine department.
1) You can hear/feel the water pump pulley for excessive play. 2) Coolant may leak from the weep hole under the water pump pulley. 3) If you add coolant frequently with no explained cause of where it is going. 4) If vehicle runs hot/overheats, check coolant level.

A water pump might squeak when it is going out. But, it is more likely that the water pump will have a very high pitched squeal when it is getting ready to go out. It might also leak fluid.
