There is an overcentering spring in the door lock mechanism. It causes the lock tab to stay up, or stay down wherever you last put it (or used the remote). This spring breaks quite commonly & the door unlocks, but then as you try to open it from outside, it comes off the first latch, but then the lock button moves down a bit (due to the fact that the broken spring won't hold it in place) & the door is again locked & the door wont release.
