on my 1988 i had to first remove the door panel and then reach up there and hold the little bracket and then unscrew the mirror and dont forget to unplug it is electric and reverse it to re install it

Your 1996 Jeep grand Cherokee dash lights probably keep flashing and dimming because of a loose or corroded ground wire. The ground wire might be getting contact at times and at other times not getting contact.

I'd personally leave it to a professional, but if you insist on doing it yourself, just remove the screws holding it in, remove the electrical wires carefully, then connect wires to new side mirror and install the new one exactly the opposite of how you un-installed the defected side view mirror.
