u must remove the outer and inner clutch covers and remove the pull rope cover.next u need to remove the starter drive gear connected to the flywheel. then it will be three bolts in a triangle pattern at the bottom left corner of the pull rope side .after that u will be done removing the starter.

You do not need to remove the clutch, covers, or starter gear.

Disconnect your battery. Remove the recoil starter. Raise and support the front end. Remove the skid plate underneath. Remove the wire from the starter. The starter is connected to a bracket on the upper side via four bolts. Use a 10mm wrench for the top one - this is the one that they think you need to remove the clutch and covers on. For the lower ones, use a 1/8 drive ratchet/socket. You already removed one of the starter bolts when you removed the recoil (the long one). Now go back and look around the starter gear. Remove these and the starter will be ready to come out. Pull straight out. Reverse directions for installation. The only tough part is getting that top bracket bolt. Install the bracket onto your new starter before installation. Make everything hand tight, then do that top bolt last. Use the round end of your wrench to lift it up in there and line it up with the hole. When you put the starter in, make sure that the end of the starter gear shaft/starter bushing and the gears line up. When you reinstall the recoil, there is a hole in the housing that receives the other end of the starter gear shaft.

hey I just did this last night, screw that above you. take the skid plate off and you can get a close ended 1o mm that is long enough you can get it off that way and a 1/4 inch drive socket. i did it, it takes patience but you can do it and if you have ramps it's easier.
