The 2004 Durango was the first year of a new body design that has a different tail light mounting system. Raise the liftgate and find two round plastic pushpins (the head is about the size of a dime) just inboard of the tail light lens. The heads are round, and I don't know the "correct" way to remove them. But I got the job done by gripping the round head with common wire pliers, rotating it 90° then pulling the pin straight out. I really couldn't tell if the 90 degree rotation was necessary, but it seemed to help. Remove both of these pins and pull the assembly rearward while slightly rotating it toward the outboard side of the vehicle. The lamps are mounted in a plastic multi-socket bar that can be separated from the tail light by removing three T15 Torx screws. Replacement of the assembly is done by reversing the removal steps.
