That year did not USE a Crank sensor.
The 1999 Chevrolet Alamo crank shaft position sensor is located on the back of the engine. You will need to remove the rear engine cover in order to access the crank position sensor.

Your crank sensor should be located near the harmonic balancer, most likely just behind the balancer. These sensors are tiny and hard to spot. NEW ANSWER: The crank sensor is behind the starter, and you will need to remove the starter to see it and to change it. The V6 engines have the crank sensors in the timing cover. But the 5.3L is a V8.

Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting screw and remove the sensor.
