Open the cover and locate the screws on each side of the console. Remove them with a Phillips screwdriver. The console will get a little loose. Do not pry it now or intend to remove it by pulling the loose end. Get the part of the console that is close to the windshield and try to get your fingers in between the ceiling and the base of the console. Pull the console down once you are able to grab the cover. Remove the connector. Installation is the opposite.
To remove the overhead console from a 2005 Ford Explorer, start by carefully prying off the plastic cover that conceals the mounting screws using a flathead screwdriver or a trim tool. Once the cover is removed, unscrew the screws securing the console to the ceiling. Gently pull the console down, disconnect any wiring harnesses for lights or switches, and fully remove the console from the vehicle. Be cautious not to damage any clips or wiring during the process.
You have to take off the whole dash board to get to the center console!
On a 1999 Explorer there is a 7.5 amp fuse in location # 10 of the fuse panel for the overhead console.
