I have the same problem on a 92 e-150, From all the sites I have looked at you have to raise the engine. But with my van there is not enough room to raise it without taking off the intake. so I it would be easier to pull the whole engine.
You need to remove the oil pan. Its bolted to the bottom of the engine

Depends on what type of engine it is. On a 5.8 liter V8, you must remove the intake manifold, jack the vehicle up, remove the two motor mounts, remove the oil pan bolts, then put a board between the jack and the engine and jack it up to get the pan off. Good Luck!
