I hope this helps as I had problems with my 1991 Aerostar sliding door not opening. I had to remove the door panels (Bottom one was hard to get out, Top one left to hang). With the door panels removed I was able to see the door mechanism only at the front were the handels were. I traced were I believed the rod went and made a small hole (1-2 inches) close to the back of the door were there had been a hole for a door Panel screw. I was able to see the rod that triggers the mechanism to open the door. It was attached to an "L" shaped peice that was bent out towards the outside of the door. By carefully bending it back strait I was able to get the door working again. After getting the door open I was unable to see any other way to get to this bent piece without makeing this hole.
