The proper way is to lower the rear axle then lower the gas tank. The pump is at the top of the tank. Make sure it's close to empty and do not cause a spark of any kind (use brass to undo the pump from the tank). Replace pump then reverse order. Make sure neg battery cable is disconnected before you start!!!! Do not cut the top of the car frame under the carpet, this is dangerous due to the close proximity of the fuel lines!!!! Good luck and get a friend to help......james w
Usually these Chevrolets have an electric fuel pump which is located inside the gas tank. I don't think a 1988 has a mechanical pump. You have to remove the gas tank to do this job. vbd
The fuel pump is in the gas tank, you have to take the tank down to replace it.

Remove fuel tank
You must remove the fuel tank.
The fuel filter on a 1988 IROC-Z Camaro is located along the fuel line, typically mounted on the passenger side of the vehicle, near the frame rail. It is positioned just before the fuel line connects to the fuel injectors. To access it, you may need to lift the car for better visibility and reach. Always ensure to relieve the fuel system pressure before attempting to replace the filter.
