First, disconnect the negative battery cable, and the instrument panel. Drain the cooling system before you raise the vehicle and disconnect the heater core. Remember to dispose of the drained fluid and return every component to its right place.

The coil pack, on a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier, is located on the top of the engine. The coil pack is near the electronic spark distributor.
Replace coil packs.
Drop the glovebox door and you will have access to it.

I have a 97 cavalier with a 95 engine and i had to replace the whole ignition module and the coil packs are 1/4 and 2/3 that's how they are numbered on the coil packs so 2 coil packs but make sure you know which one isn't firing to replace them and u will have to replace you spark plugs after that.
well the 90 3.1 is the same as the 2.8 where the coil pack module is located underneath the front exhaust manifold to replace the module u have to take out all 3 coils leave the park plug wires connected and then disconnect the wires to the module and take out a couple of bolts and just replace it the way it was
