The switch is above the brake pedal-- new one at parts store for under $10.00... unplug the lead to it, pull small pin on brake pedal shaft with needle nose pliers, slide off plastic washer and plastic bushing, switch will slide off the shaft. Reverse the procedure to assemble, plug in switch, make sure it's working before you button every thing back up.
Why ? Just replace it.

Not very hard. You have remove the panel that is under the dash. It should be a big black panel. The switch is on the brake pedal. Remove the two wires to the switch and unscrew it and replace it and reverse the order and you are done.
THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH IS NOT PUTTING OUT BATTERY WHENEVER THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PUSHED DOWN. CHECK TO SEE IF BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON WHEN BRAKE PEDAL IS PUSHED DOWN. IF BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON, THEN YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SHIFT IT OUT OF PARK. IF NO BRAKE LIGHTS, THEN IT WON'T SHIFT OUT OF PARK. IF THIS IS THE CASE, THEN REPLACE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH.
on the arm of the brak pedal there is a rod pinned to the arm along with the switch. pull the clip out with pliars and slide the pin out half way , then lift the switch out. unplug it and replace. install is just the opposite.
This is usually cause by a stuck brake light switch on the brake pedal. Replace it.
