take off air filter housing mark down the positions of all the wires. take off the spark plug wires undo the clips take off old one put on new one. reinstall wires in same pattren as before. If it is just the cap and rotor you are doing if it is the entire assembly either get a auto repair manual or a mechanic

More than likely the bearing is bad. Take it out and see if it is hard to turn. If so, the bearings are bad and you will need to replace the distributor.
remove the distributor cap remove the screws that attach the pick coil to the base of the distributor and replace in reverse order

The pickup coil in the distributor? !976 should be an HEI distributor. Take the cap off, unplug the wires going to the distributor, remove the rotor and the pickup coil is under the rotor and held in place with two screws.
The rotation is clockwise.
replace the cap, it most likely has a hairline crack or bad seal.
On the 2.8L V6 the distributor cap is held on with two screws. Unscrew the two screws and pull straight up on the distributor cap to remove it from the distributor.
