If you don't have the "special tools", then you first have to remove the big nut on the back of the hub after you've removed the wheel and brake drum of course. Put the nut 3/4 of the way back onto the hub threads. You can tap on that to move the hub out of the bearing (careful not to damage threads). Once the hub has been moved out as far as it'll go with the nut on, remove the nut. Go to the outside and behind the lug nut bolts you'll have more room to see the "C" clip or retaining ring. I pried out an end of the ring and with a couple of screw drivers worked my way around to remove that ring. From the back side you can use a pipe as I did and pound out the bad bearing. I just finished doing all this. 2-3 hours and the bearing was $45. Good luck

To replace the steady bearing on the rear drive shaft of a 2005 Ford Escape, first, safely lift and support the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the rear driveshaft by unbolting it from the rear differential and the transmission. Once the driveshaft is out, locate the steady bearing, remove the retaining bolts, and replace the bearing with a new one, ensuring it's properly aligned. Reassemble the driveshaft, securing it back in place, and double-check all connections before lowering the vehicle.

You can replace both... Bearing or Hub... Bearings are cheaper, but harder to find and replace. Hub assemblies are easier to replace, but slightly more expensive.
To replace a rear wheel bearing on a Ford Laser, first, safely lift and secure the vehicle on jack stands, then remove the rear wheel. Next, detach the brake caliper and rotor, if necessary, to access the hub assembly. Use a suitable tool to remove the hub nut and then extract the hub assembly to reach the bearing. Finally, press out the old bearing using a bearing puller, install the new bearing, reassemble the hub, and reinstall all components in reverse order.
To change the carrier bearing on a 2002 Ford Escape, first, lift and secure the vehicle, then remove the drive shaft by unbolting it at both the front and rear connections. Next, detach the old carrier bearing from its mount and replace it with the new one, ensuring it is properly aligned. Reinstall the drive shaft and torque the bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications, then lower the vehicle and test drive to ensure everything is functioning smoothly.
