I just replaced a starter on my daughters 2000 Alero and I would assume this is the same from 99 to 04.

I drove the car up on ramps for better access to get under the car.

Disconnect Neg. battery cable

Under the car, you will see a plastic cover between the main frame beam and the underside of the radiator. This will come off ( 2 Wing Nuts) for easy access to the starter. You can now remove the two wires that go to the starter solenoid. Now you must remove the splash guard on the starter. This is a cover plate that consists of two screws. Now you can see two main bolts that hold the starter on. Remove these bolts and the starter can be removed from the underside of car. My replacement starter cost 130.00 with life time warranty from O'Riley Auto Parts.

Good Luck!
