I'm in the middle of this job on a 1995. Found out the hard way (didn't read the service manual close enough) that you must remove the timing belt to do this job. So much for what I thought was going to be an easy task.

To replace the water pump on a Chevy Tracker, first, disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the coolant from the radiator. Remove any components obstructing access to the water pump, such as the serpentine belt and timing cover if applicable. Unscrew the old water pump, clean the mounting surface, and install the new pump with a new gasket. Finally, reassemble everything, refill the coolant, and check for leaks.
Remove the water return hose from your 1996 Chevrolet water pump. Remove the water pump belt. Remove the water pump retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new water pump.

You take it to the shop. You have to take off the timing belt to do the water pump
