My 97 4.0 Ranger's thermostat is in the front of the engine. I has two bolts you have to take off. I had to replace the gasket. Leaked when I got on it hard. It's called the "thermostat housing. Thermostat is easy to replace. Great engine.

Follow the bottom Radiator hose and it is behind the distributor on the drivers side.
Drain the radiator. Disconnect the top radiator hose at the engine. Remove the hose inlet, which hoses the thermostat. Remove the thermostat, replace it then reverse the process to finish the job.
