Depends on the year - earlier models will reset just by disconnecting the battery
From 1995 onwards you will need to use an "OBD11" reader which inserts into a socket/plug located under the driver side instrument panel.. You can then run through the test sequence and display the fault code/s . Then you can reset. You can find a reader at many auto part stores. They can range in price from inexpensive to very expensive. You should check at Harbor Freight stores if you have one. they sell an inexpensive model that will do the trick.

Traditionally the engine computer for a 1990 Jaguar xj6 is located in the car near the engine. The computer can also locate behind the dashboard near the engine.
To reset the check engine light on a 1997 Jaguar XJ6, you can use an OBD-II scanner to clear any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that are triggering the light. Alternatively, you can disconnect the car's battery for about 15 minutes, which may also reset the light. However, ensure to address any underlying issues before resetting the light to avoid potential engine problems. Always consult your vehicle's manual for specific instructions related to your model.
