Is the needle stuck under the "E" pin? When off, does the gas needle hang straight down? If so, the repair is SOOOOOO simple you'll want to light your car on fire.
1st: Make sure the car is off and you can clearly see the dashboard.
2nd: Take a paperclip, straighten it all the way out, then make a 90 degree bend in the middle and the last quarter inch or so.
3rd: Insert the bent tip of the paperclip into the opening where the trip odometer button is and push/play with the needle (pushing towards the thermostat) until you can get it past the other gauge and around on top of the "E" pin.
DONE!!!!
GOOD LUCK!!!! ;)
What happens is that there is a certain scenario that GM doesn't mention. After filling the gas tank, and removing the battery, the sensor for the fuel system gets knocked 180 degrees out of phase as soon as power is reapplied. The reason they don't like to mention it is because the part that they want to replace costs $165 plus all the time spent since it's inside the fuel tank.
Put a fuel pressure gauge on it and that will tell you.
Fuse location for temperature gauge for a Malibu
my gauge reads 10 volts drive half mile it go to 8 Alternator is defective and needs replacing.
Check for power and ground to the sending unit . If you have that then ground the sending unit and see if it works. If the gauge works then the sending unit is defective.
Check for power and ground to the sending unit. If they are good then you have a bad sending unit.
alternator probably needs replacing not charging battery or bat is dead and not taking charge
You will have to replace the fuel module which consists of the pump, sending unit and sock filter. Which means you will have to remove the fuel tank.
The float is stuck down at the bottom of the tank or you could have a wiring problem.
you should be able to find a shop manual at the local library with the right information on this -- make copies of the pages, as they are usually for REFERENCE only...:)
If the gas gauge stops working is there a fuse for it?
The fuel pump comes as a module. It consists of the fuel pump, the sending unit for the gauge and a strainer. You will have to lower the gas tank to be able to access it.
Why does the temperature gauge on your 2001 malibu not work and the cooling fans run all the time?
