The system you have on your Camaro is the one of the first system Chevy had where a computer was used. This system uses what was called the "CCC" (Computer Control Command) system. You should have a small flat 5 pin connector under the left side of the dash. This will hold trouble codes that are present when the check engine light is on. With this early system you cannot jump across terminals to read the codes like the later (OBD I) systems. If you have a Snap On MT2500 scanner or know a shop that has one, they will be able to use MULTI-1 connector to plug into the 5 pin block and read your codes.
Although this is old technology most any quality technician can read your codes for you. My experience is that when the check engine light comes on on those early models it's usually related to the EGR system in some way.
Good luck.
check your fluids my camaros light was on and i ignored it i blew my engine
unhook the battery for about ten minutes
The check engine light comes on at start up for a bulb check. If it stays on with the engine running the computer has detected a malfunction. You need to have it checked for codes.
Connect an OBD2 scan tool which will retrieve the codes set by the ECU. If you mean how to check to see if the light is working just turn the key on without starting the engine. The check engine light will illuminate.
Scan the ECU with an OBD2 scan tool to retrieve the code that has been set.
The check engine light cannot be retrieved on a 1990 Cavalier unless a problem develops with the engine. The engine can be checked for errors, though, by using a tester that is plugged into the vehicle's computer.
96 means it's OBDII, so a flashing check engine light means it is misfiring bad and it is threatening to melt the cats.
The check engine light comes on when the ECU detects a problem with the emission system in the vehicle. Have the ECU scanned to retrieve the code that will tell you what part of the system is being effected.
Engine coolant temp sensor. I would check codes if you have a ECT code replace the sensor. does the check engine light come on with key on engine off, If it doesn't replace bulb. If the engine light works check fuel preasure,
First thing you should do is check oil level and radiator and believe this or not if the radiator holding tanks water level is not up to line this will kick on check engine light.
Have vehicle scanned to determine problem and have codes cleared
The check engine light comes on when the ECU detects a problem with the emissions system on the vehicle. Have the ECU scanned to retrieve the code that has been set. The code will tell you where to start looking.
