You can't set the timing yourself, the computer does it. If it seems like it is out of time it could be spark plugs, cap and rotor, or the distributor is off a tooth. The edi distributor has an 8 and a 6 on the inside after you take the cap off. Get the engine at top dead center then line the rotor up so it points to the 6. When you put the cap on it will be pointing at the #2 plug, but this is the correct way. If those things don't work could also be plug wires or fuel air mixure. Hope this helps.
