Highly doubtful, the engine has a timing chain and the ignition relies on a crank sensor for timing. But if the chain did jump you could probably tell by doing a compression test.
It probably won't start and run and a compression test would show very low, if any compression in all cylinders.

On the Vortec the computer does it all.
The ECM controls the timing with information sent to it from sensors such as the crank sensor and the knock sensor.

The Chevrolet S10 doesn't have a timing belt.
Follow the directions on the emissions label under the hood of your car, it will tell you what to set the timing at and what connectors to disconnect to set the timing.
