Buy a Hand-held scanner. This would be the best investment you will ever make. Today's scanner will work on any car/SUV/truck from 1995 and up. I bought one last year and it paid for itself within 6 months. I was checking and turning engines lights off at work for $20.00 each.

Plugs or / and Coil Packs. Auto Zone will check your codes for free and will tell you which plugs or coils are bad. Then replace.
To determine which coil pack is defective and needing replacement, you will need a diagonistic computer or at least a scan tool. if one is not avaible to you, it may be worth the money to have it diagnosed by a mechanic. He can tell you which one or more is bad. That way you don't have to "throw parts at it".

If you have the 4.6 liter ( 281 cubic inch ) V8 it has spark plug wires and ( 2 ) coil packs on a 1997 Ford Expedition . It has EDIS ( Electronic Distributorless Ignition System) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have the 5.4 liter ( 330 cubic inch ) V8 it has the Coil On Plug ( C.O.P. ) ignition system with ( 8 ) individual coils for the spark plugs
I'm not a mechanic / technician but on the 1999 Ford Expedition I believe the 4.6 liter was still using the EDIS ( Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ) which uses ( 2 ) coil packs with spark plug wires , where the 5.4 liter has always used the Coil On Plug ( C.O.P. ) ignition system with ( 8 ) individual coils
Hi, I am no expert, but I have had to change several coil's in a 4.6 Ford. Get a code reader that plugs in under your dash, about $15.00 or so, or you can go to Auto Zone, they will read your code for free. This will tell you which coil is bad.
