You can set it good enough by ear to make it run. But to get the timing right you must use an OBDII engine scanner. You can no longer use a timing light.

in my 98, Chevy siverado, c1500 2wd, 5.7L vortec, I found it located to the left (passenger) side of the manifold, near the throttle body. It can be identified by the vaccum line coming out the left side of the sensor, leading to the Vortec air box.
