Turn off engine.

Depress Emergency Brake.

Turn on engine. The lights will not turn on until the E-Brake is released. Get in the habit of setting the E-Brake and you will have less of an issue with the auto headlights. I don't think there is an easy way to bypass the auto headlights entirely.

The headlight switch is essentially, "just for show."
