glow plugs do not fire glow plugs are used to heat the chamber where the diesel ignites diesel is not ignited by a spark diesel is ignited thru compression
Glow plugs provide the heat for combustion in diesel engines, just like spark plugs are used to ignite regular gasoline in standard engines.
No they do not, After engine is running there is no need for glow plugs because there is enough heat in the cylinders to warm the fuel. The glow plugs are designed to heat up the cold diesel fuel on start up only. Actually glow plugs will cycle briefly after engine start up to keep the cold fuel from bringing down cyl temp until the engine warms up. A power stroke will keep glow plugs on for up to 180 sec. A chev will run considerably less I believe.
Change the pre=heat (glow plug) relay.
Glow plugs need electricity while starting the engine. After that, they do not use electricity, but stay red hot due to the heat of combustion and pressure within the cylinder.
A typical glow plug circuit energizes a timed relay when the key is turned, after the preset time has expired ( about 10 seconds ) the light to allow starting is illuminated. Glow plugs are not like spark plugs, they only need to be energized when the engine is cold, and only then long enough to heat them up once, after that the heat of the engine is enough to cause combustion.
Glo plugs are basically a heater in the top of each cylinder that heat up for the better starting of a diesel engine.
diesel engines do not use spark plugs because diesel has more oil, burns slower, and is more difficult to ignite. Therefor spark plugs are insufficient with just spark so instead they use glow plugs witch provides a high amount of heat to the fuel and ignites more quickly and reliably. The amount of compression pressure in a diesel engine is sufficient to produce enough heat to ignite the fuel. The glow plugs are only used on a cold start.
Ive got an STDT aswell that doesn't like starting on the morning. Try changing the glow plugs for some new ones because old glow plugs don't heat up enough.
It takes a lot of amps to heat the glow plugs and turn over a motor with such high compression at the same time.
They preheat the air in the cylinder to make starting easier. they actually heat the diesel fuel to make starting easier
Diesel engines use heat and compression to ignite fuel. Although not needed in more modern diesel's many had glow plugs in a similar placement that is used to add the required heat for starting, but are not needed once at temperature. With higher injection pressures allowing a finer mist of fuel, thus requiring less heat and compression, glow plugs have largely been eliminated (but still have other heaters for cold weather starts.)
