A Ford Explorer will last as long as the owner takes care of it. You will see some transmission issues with the 1997, but most will last 250k to 300k and over. Change your oil and check your fluids on a regular bases.

Normally they will last the life of the engine and are replaced during an engine rebuild.
Ford by far they are the most reliable and will last the longest. dodge is powerful but they usally don't last long and have bad transmissions. Chevy is good but they don't have as much power as a ford.
