The vast majority of Taurus/Sables came with either a 3.0 or 3.8 v6 engine.
There is the SHO model that also offered a v8, and that model has distinctive markings.
It would also be pretty easy to open the hood and start counting the sparkplug wires - if you can see only the front side wires, multiply by 2.

1994 and 1995 Ford Taurus wagons have two catalytic converters. They either came with 3.0L or 3.8L V6 engines. Each exhaust manifold (3 cylinders front and 3 cylinders back) feeds into one catalytic converter.
