Core plugs, or freeze plugs, are actually the holes where the sand is drained out duringthe casting of the engine block. These holes also interconnect the passage of the coolant inside the block. It was called a freeze plug because it is supposed to protect the block from freezing damage, since water expands when it freezes. There are three plugs on each side of the block of the 5.9 liter Dodge engine. There are also two at the rear above the flywheel. And one each on the rear of theheads.
