Oil quart quantity is roughly equal to the number of engine cylinders. A 4-cylinder needs about 4 quarts, a V6 would need 6 quarts. Usually you put in one less quart than that number, wait about 15 minutes for everything to drain, then check the dipstick. Ideally it should be right below the "Fill" mark which means one more quart will be perfect. Occasionally it will be midway to full and a quart more would be bad (don't overfill oil). You'd only want to add half a quart at that point.
