It is not about how much gold there was in South America compared to North America. If you read your history, you come to understand that the reason South America was conquered and colonized by the Spaniards was that the first men to arrive were the famous Conquistadores. The Conquistadores ventured to go to South America in the early 1500's with gold in their minds, they wanted to find as much gold as quickly as possible, go back to Spain and live like kings for the rest of their lives. Conquistadores never intended to stay in South America or make it their new home. In contrast, the Pilgrims came to North America looking for a new home, they wanted to stay and have their own country away from England. Gold was not in the minds of the Pilgrims when they came to America in the 1600's. That is the difference between North and South America's history as related to European colonization and conquest. Another answer: Yes, at one time.
