My 99 Intrigue w/ 3.8L takes 4.5 quarts oil w/ oil filter change. Puts the oil level in middle of proper range on dipstick. Reference: owner's manual & 150K miles of my own oil & filter changes.

Automatic Transmission, Total Fill 4 speed 4T65E....13.0 quarts [1] With the ENG at operating TEMP, shift TRANS through all gears.
Let ENG slow idle in PARK for at least 3 minutes.

if its got a 3.5 you need 6 qts.
You CAN change the oil filter by itself and then top up the oil , but it's best to change both in the long run

5W30 is appropriate and recommended for all but the most severe service in North American GM cars, 1999 model year.
