An air sample is pulled through a calibrated size chamber, and UV of wavelength 254 nm is passed through that gas stream. The intensity of the light source is periodically calibrated, and the intensity received across the chamber is measured. The "Beer Lambert law" is used to infer the amount of ozone present in the chamber, and the "pollution level" is then known. Other methods are being researched.
