It would be a big help to take the caliper off first. There are two Allen bolts an the back of the caliper.First remove the cotter pin on the bottom of the nut on the bottom side of the balljoint and remove the nut. Use a pickle fork to separate the balljoint from where the balljoint goes through the hole where the nut is. Then if it is original, you can either use a torch and burn the rivets out or use a 4" grinder as I did and cut the rivets out. Cut the tops off and tap them out with a punch and hammer. These are usually pressed in so you will have to use a pry bar to separate the balljoint from the upper control arm and make sure a thin metal sleeve comes out with it. If it doesnt, use some common sense to get the sleeve out. Next, you will need a large c-clamp and apiece of steel about 4" by 4". Put the new metal sleeve on top of the control arm so that the cup is down and use the c-clamp to press the sleeve in. Do this as evenly as possible. After the sleeve is in all the way, place the balljoint in the sleeve. May have to tap it in a bit but make sure the bolt holes are lined up because it is difficult to move the balljoint once it is seated all the way. Next put the bolts in with the nuts on top. Tighten and then put the bottom of the balljoint through the hole that the old one came out of. You may need to jack up the axle to make it a little easier. Put the retaining nut on and tighten. Put the cotter oin in and you are done. Remove the brake fluid res cap.To get the caliper back on, remove the brake pads and use the c-clamp to force the piston in the caliper back in to flush. Put the res cap back on. Put the tire on and start the truck. Pump the brakes to get a good pedal. You are done
You change the control arms, upper and lower. The ball joints are manufactured into the control arms.

How to change upper and lower ball joints on a 1997 ford explorer all wheel drive?
The lower ball joints have to be pressed out. The upper ball joints are part of the control arm, so the complete upper assembly has to be replaced.
What year, if it has upper it has to be pre 1989
You probably should have a professional do that, it is not an easy job, they are under the upper intake plenum.
Im basing this answer off my 97 blazer ls 4wd. Both upper and lower ball joints are bolt on so u will need to remove the bolts and the ball joints should fall right off.
