Very straight-forward procedure.

  • Disconnect the EGR valve - 2, 10mm nuts
  • Disconnect the rubber air intake tube (5/16ths nut driver?)
  • I don't think you need to disconnect the throttle cables, but easy enough to figure out if you have to
  • Remove the 6, 8mm bolts upper intake bolts

See "Related Questions" below for more as many of us find that removing the intake plenum really helps when changing the rear sparkplugs - so there's some good detail in that question too.

There are six bolts holding it down. should be 8mm. just take em off and you might want to remove the air hose (5/16ths nut driver/socket) if you intend on moving it out of the way.

The EGR Valve will also not let you pull it so just take off the bottom two nuts...those should be 10mm. good luck

How do you replace the intake manifold 1997 mercury grand marqie?

To replace the intake manifold on a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis, first, disconnect the battery and remove any components obstructing access, such as the air intake and throttle body. Then, drain the coolant and remove the intake manifold bolts using a socket wrench, carefully lifting the manifold off the engine. Clean the mating surfaces, apply a new gasket, and install the new manifold by reversing the removal process, ensuring all connections are secure and the system is properly refilled with coolant before starting the engine.

Do you have to remove the intake manifold to change the bypass hose on a 1997 4.6 Mercury Marquis?

No, not for the hose but, I have seen the metal bypass tube that the hose connects to, rust out and cause a coolant leak out the back of the engine. The intake manifold would have to be removed to replace that metal tube.
