I have 2006 Chevy Malibu When I accelerate from a stop I notice that the RPM's go up to almost 3000 before going to the next gear then drops down to around 1200?
That is because your accelerating.
if you press on the gas pedal harder for longer, it will go up to 4000,5000 and so on. when you let off the gas pedal the engine isn't trying to go faster so it works less hence the number drops back down to 1200
if your at a stop iding at 1200 you chould get that checked out.
a fully warmed up car should only be at around 650 rpm
