Is there still actually loads of fuel in the tank? if so try checking the sender unit float in the fuel tank and check to see if there is fuel actually inside the float bulb as this could be your problem there may be a crack in it.

Was the volt gauge working? If it showed no response when driving then the charge/ign fuse could be blown and you were running off battery power till it ran down.
You could be referring to anything from shotguns to steel plate, but I'll take a wild guess you are referring to wire gauge. 10 gauge wire is thicker than 12 gauge. If you were referring to something other than wire, write again and tell us what you are referring to.
Most likely, the temperature gauge's connection is loose. It is usually on the thermostat. An inoperative temperature gauge will cause most check engine lights to come on.
Usually the gauge in on the dashboard with all the other gauges. That way you can read it while driving.

It goes up while driving and down when you're idle....that's normal
at the beginning it will be cold, but it will warm up as you start driving
